The Best Downhill Crashes

Well my last post received rave reviews from the Ride Monkey Forums. At this rate I will have the most popular downhill mountain bike blog by July possibly earlier. So I decided to make a more exciting this post and create a compilation of downhill mountain bike crashes. Nothing sucks more than crashing and nothing is funnier than seeing someone else crash so here's the best videos I could find.

A horrible crash going 170kmph

Bike Locks That Will Knock Your Socks Off

Nothing sucks more than losing your mountain bike due to theft. Last summer my girlfriend and I left some bikes unlocked behind a locked gate and two bikes got stolen. Fortunately one was a junker but the other bike will be sorely missed. Hopefully this post will help you be able to find a good lock but remember that you should always lock up your bike whenever you leave it unattended.

When searching for bike locks I came across some things that seem fundamental to bike locks.
Good locks are
1. Heavy
2. Expensive
3. Tested
4. Are a reputable brand
5. Are U-Locks or Chain Locks

Unfortunately heavy locks seem to be the most secure locks. Kryptonite bike locks which are probably the most well known will be 4+ pounds for a U-Lock and up to 9 pounds for a chain! Abus bike locks are about half that weight but are also more expensive. Abus also seems to put their bike locks through more tests than other brands especially their most expensive bike locks. The other brand that showed up a lot was On Guard which seems to have slightly more weight (5ish pounds for a U lock) and less security at a lower price point.

Next when doing my research I found that cable bike locks will not provide any security to someone who has any tools that is looking to steal a bike and merely acts as a deterrent. To protect my mountain bike I would definitely recommend going with the U-Lock over the chain lock because the weight is half and you can easily mount a U-lock on your bike.

As far as price goes I've heard recommendations that you spend from 10% to 20% of the value of your bike on a lock. Personally I would say that if you are looking for a bike lock that is just a deterrent you might as well just buy a twenty dollar U-Lock.  If you really want to prevent anyone that doesn't have power tools from stealing your bike you are going to have to spend $80+ if you live in Canada and $60+ if you live in the USA. I ended up getting a Kryptonite New York U-Lock from one of Amazon's sellers that isn't on that list anymore. It ended up being $79 Canadian after shipping costs and hopefully will keep my mountain bike safe for a long time to come.

Here's a video of two guys testing the limits of bike thievery. Looks like they found that people are more likely to help you steal a bike than stop you.
